Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber – Dated 1863
Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber – Dated 1863 A classic Model 1840 Light Artillery saber dated 1863, presenting with a pleasing and honest field-worn appearance. The flat-backed, curved blade retains a bright gray tone with light peppering and a soft aged patina. While inspector markings are no longer visible, the blade is clearly stamped on the ricasso with “U.S. / J.H. / 1863,” denoting government inspection and year of manufacture. The reverse is further marked with the contractor stamp and inspector’s number. The blade shows a few minor edge nicks consistent with service use but remains sound overall. The brass hilt exhibits a mellow, untouched patina, with the guard and pommel displaying a pleasing, even tone from age and handling. The grip retains its original leather covering and twisted wire wrap, both tight and intact. The handguard is stamped with the inspector’s mark, and all components show consistent wear indicative of period use rather than later alteration. The accompanying steel scabbard has a dark, aged surface with a deep brown-gray patina. It remains solid, showing scattered surface wear and peppering, but free of major dents or structural issues. A strong, honest Civil War artillery saber with clear date and inspector markings, offering excellent display appeal and untouched character.
