Planted between 1880 and 1920 directly behind the St. Helena Public Library, Library Vineyard is one of California’s most historically rich and distinctive sites. This rare old-vine field blend is extraordinarily diverse, anchored by Petite Syrah but interplanted with a wide array of red and white varieties, reflecting a bygone era of California viticulture. Peloursin, Cinsault, Syrah, Mission, Alicante Bouschet, Grand Noir, Carignan, Grenache, and Zinfandel grow alongside white grapes such as Muscat of Alexandria, Muscadelle, Burger, and Green Hungarian. All varieties are harvested and co-fermented together, creating a wine that is a true, unfiltered expression of the vineyard as a whole. Farmed organically, the head-trained vines are dry-farmed and hand harvested from loam soils in the Saint Helena AVA. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, followed by aging for 15 months in barrel (80% used oak, 20% new; primarily French with a portion of American oak). The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its authenticity and complexity. Aromatic and deeply expressive, this singular wine reveals remarkable complexity, reflecting the diverse character of the many grapes woven into the field blend.
