L-471 Mini Snowball Pleco - 2-3"
L471 Mini Snowball Pleco, Hypancistrus sp. L471, is a small South American loricariid catfish native to the Rio Xingu basin in Brazil. It inhabits warm, fast-flowing tributaries and rocky river systems with high oxygen levels, strong current, and extensive submerged rockwork. These environments are typically clear, highly oxygenated, and filled with crevices and caves that provide shelter among the stonework. Adult L471 Mini Snowball Plecos generally reach about 3 to 4 inches in length, making them significantly smaller and more manageable than many other pleco species. The body is compact and flattened with a broad head and large pectoral fins adapted for holding position in current. Coloration consists of a dark chocolate brown to black base covered with bright white to cream spotting across the body and fins. Compared to the standard Snowball Pleco varieties, the spotting on L471 is often finer and denser, giving the fish a crisp, high-contrast appearance. A tank of at least 20 to 30 gallons is suitable for a single specimen, though larger aquariums are preferred for groups or mixed communities. The aquarium should include abundant rockwork, driftwood, caves, and shaded hiding places. Strong filtration and moderate to high water flow are important to replicate the oxygen-rich conditions of the Rio Xingu. Fine gravel or sand works well as substrate, though most of the fish’s time is spent on hard surfaces and within caves. Water conditions should remain warm, stable, and extremely clean. Temperatures between 80 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit are ideal, with a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately soft water. High oxygenation and low nitrate levels are essential for long-term health, and regular water changes are strongly recommended. Feeding L471 Mini Snowball Plecos requires a protein-focused omnivorous diet. In nature they feed on insect larvae, small invertebrates, biofilm, and organic material collected among rocks and wood. In the aquarium they readily accept sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworms and mysis shrimp, and quality prepared foods. Unlike many common plecos, they are not heavy algae eaters and should not be relied upon for algae control. Temperament is peaceful but somewhat territorial toward other bottom-dwelling fish and similar plecos, especially in confined spaces. They do well with peaceful community fish that tolerate warm, highly oxygenated water. Multiple individuals can often be maintained together if enough caves and territory are provided. Breeding is possible in captivity and follows the typical Hypancistrus pattern. Males claim caves where spawning occurs, and the male guards the eggs and fry until they become free-swimming. Warm water, strong oxygenation, and stable conditions are important for successful breeding. Hypancistrus sp. L471 is a compact and highly attractive pleco prized for its crisp white spotting, manageable size, and compatibility with warm river-style aquariums. With strong filtration, proper caves, and a quality diet, the Mini Snowball Pleco becomes an excellent centerpiece for smaller South American setups and specialized pleco collections.
