A Set of Six Carved White Marble Relief Panels Depicting Celestial Musicians in the Tang Taste

Each rectangular panel finely carved in low relief with a half-length celestial being set before a plain arched aureole, the upper spandrels filled with scrolling ruyi clouds. The figures with full, serene faces and downcast eyes, an urna at the brow, the hair dressed in elaborate high jeweled chignons and crowns, with long celestial scarves and ribboned hair-fillets trailing to the sides, the robes falling in fluid pleats. Together the figures form a heavenly orchestra, each holding a different instrument or attribute. 23″ H 17″ W 1 1/4″ D
