Amethyst Cameo Brooch | Odysseus | 11.30ct | 18ct Gold | Victorian English c.1880s
A remarkable Victorian amethyst cameo of the finest quality — Odysseus, carved in high pool relief into a rich purple amethyst, glancing upward with the immediacy of a man mid-battle. The carving is exceptional. The tilted helmet, the intensity of the expression, the sense of arrested motion — all are perfectly in keeping with 19th century representations warriors like Odysseus in the ancient world. The amethyst itself is softly faceted around the perimeter, framing the portrait with a depth that flat stones simply cannot achieve, and the estimated 11.30 carats give the piece a presence well beyond its 1.25 inch diameter. What makes this brooch additionally remarkable for a collector is the survival of its original brooch back and small O-ring — intact and original, something genuinely rare to encounter after 140 years.
