This beginner guide sets you up for success to knit beyond scarves. No more guesswork, no fuss, just clear stitch and row counts that help you knit scarves quickly and easily. Instead of guessing, you’re working with clear numbers and repeatable structures that make fabric predictable and controllable. You’ll learn how 12 ply mohair fabric behaves through real making—ribbing, mohair drape, stripe placement, ruffles, and decorative details—so you start to see how simple choices shape the final result. I began designing my own 12 ply knitwear and needed a clear guide with rules, consistency and flexibility. A go-to at a glance. I wanted to skip the hard part and get straight to creativity, but not having a base guide held me back. I began recording my notes and turned them into a guide. Now I could find sizes, stitch and row counts quickly and easily and get straight to the fun part: adding beads, using op-shop yarns, add texture, hand-dyed gradients, over-dyeing knitwear or begin learning new knitting techniques. The numbers are all here, ready and waiting for creativity to be unleashed. These projects build into a larger system. What begins as scarves scales into collars, necklines, and eventually full garments, giving you a clear pathway from small experiments to wearable design. The scarf is your training ground for a larger system—what is essentially the foundation of a modular approach to knitwear. This guide, and the modular system that follows, is built entirely on foundational knitting techniques: stockinette stitch, purl stitch, increasing, decreasing, cast on, and cast off. Skills you will gain in this guide: Knit your first mohair scarf Tension, Fabric structure Bow scarf / ruffles / tassels / increasing / decreasing Surface design and flexible knitwear structure Multi-colour stripe placements + row counts Quick & Easy Design Rules for structure Long, medium, short, neck tie scarf length row counts Repeatable templates Neck warmers + collars Accessories into wearable structures Direct bridge into modular garment design This guide does not teach you how to cast on, cast off, knit, purl, increase or decrease. What You Need to Get Started: 8 mm circular needles 10 mm circular needles (straight needles can be used for flat kntting, but circulars are recommended for flexibility beyond this guide) 12 ply mohair yarn paired with 4 ply merino yarn Optional: use mohair on its own, or with a lace-weight pairing (Yarns used in this guide: “Love” African Expressions & NZ Cowgirl Hills Mohair) The designs are written for a 12ply mohair and 4ply merino or lace (optional) combination, worked on 10mm needles, creating a soft, open fabric with natural drape. Gauge is approximate rather than fixed, and small variations are expected as part of the fabric’s behaviour and flexibility. Instructions focus on clear, simple steps so you can settle into a steady knitting flow without complicated charts or constant counting. Once the structure is understood, you can focus on the process of knitting rather than checking instructions. This system is ideal for knitters who enjoy calm, repetitive knitting and want pieces that feel consistent and adaptable. It is designed for ease, rhythm, and gentle construction rather than technical complexity. Whether you are a newer knitter or simply prefer intuitive, low-stress projects, this modular system offers a relaxed and cohesive approach from start to finish. This isn’t just a knitting pattern; it’s a guide, designed to be a go-to starting point for creating fast, easy to knit, everyday wearable and sellable scarves. They come from my own open- minded approach to knitting - beginning with a single loop and building intuitively from there. The Palette Parlour patterns are simple and straight forward - intentionally basic so you can add your own creative spin. Think of it as a blank canvas for your imagination: Test new yarns, knit stripes, add ruffles, integrate a hat. This guide provides base stitch counts, while giving you freedom to explore. Build on the basics or keep it classic—this flexible foundation is perfect for knitters who want a blend of structure and creativity. I hope this pattern and guidebook sparks joy in your own knitting and all that is possible! INSTRUCTIONS 1. ORDER Purchase the order on Etsy. Download the PDF File. 2.
