In 1969, Gibson drastically altered its traditional acoustic recipe by changing the J-45 and J-50 from their classic "sloped shoulder" silhouette to a "square shoulder" dreadnought shape to directly compete with Martin. In 1971, the word "Deluxe” was added to the model name. These 1970s Deluxe models are knowno for producing a noticeably louder, brighter, and punchier tone than their 50s and 60s counterparts.
