The gold is built up from the surface, layer by layer, in a technique called brocateado de oro that Cuzco artists have used for centuries to give the Virgin's garments real weight and texture. You can feel it when you run your finger across the canvas. It catches light differently from every angle. The frame is solid wood, hand-carved in a baroque scroll pattern and finished in gold leaf.
