Origin and Weaving Tradition The Nain rug comes from the town of Nain, at the western edge of the great central desert of Iran, near Isfahan. Although Nain only began producing pile rugs in the twentieth century, it rapidly became one of the most respected names in fine weaving — closely related in drawing and refinement to the Isfahan school, but with its own restrained, light palette. Nain is celebrated for very high knot density and for the use of silk to outline the central medallion, the spandrels and the principal motifs, which catches the light against the soft wool ground. This piece is hand-knotted in fine new wool — soft, lustrous lambswool — with silk highlights picking out the finer detail, on a cotton foundation. Colour and Composition The rug is worked in a quiet, elegant beige and ivory palette, the hallmark of Nain, typically lifted by fine accents of soft blue. A central medallion with delicate floral tracery sits on an open ground, framed by a finely drawn border. The silk highlights give the design a gentle sheen that shifts with the light, while the wool ground keeps the whole composition soft and warm underfoot.
