I liked how a negative image can make someone look both present and distant at the same time — as if you recognise them, but can’t fully reach them. The black splashes and wandering lines interrupt the portrait rather than decorate it. I wanted the painting to feel unstable and alive, closer to a passing moment in a crowded city than a fixed portrait. Causeway Bay is loud, bright, busy, and constantly moving.
