Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken for the Nintendo 3DS is a sweeping legal adventure set at the turn of the 20th century — a bold reimagining of the Ace Attorney formula transplanted from modern Japan to the collision point between Meiji-era Japan and Victorian England. Players step into the shoes of Ryūnosuke Naruhodō, a second-year student at Imperial Yūmei University and distant ancestor of Phoenix Wright, who is thrust into the role of defense attorney under the most harrowing circumstances imaginable — accused of murder himself at the very start of the game. His companion is Susato Mikotoba, a judicial assistant with a progressive frame of mind, a passion for foreign mystery novels, and a surprisingly fierce spirit. Together, their pursuit of the truth takes them across the ocean to the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London, where they find themselves up against Barok van Zieks — the legendary British prosecutor known as the Grim Reaper of the Old Bailey — and must navigate a legal system utterly foreign to them both. The game carries on the investigation and courtroom formula the series is known for, with fully 3D environments and character models built on the engine of Dual Destinies. A groundbreaking new mechanic sets this entry apart from every previous Ace Attorney: the British jury system. Six jurors sit in on every trial and vote independently on the defendant's guilt — if all six vote guilty, a verdict is reached — but Ryūnosuke can turn the tide by directly examining each juror mid-trial to expose contradictions in their reasoning and swing their votes. A second new mechanic introduces Herlock Sholmes — a flamboyant, brilliantly odd consulting detective loosely based on a legendary fictional character — whose deductive sequences ask players to correct his wildly off-base but technically logical conclusions by redirecting his reasoning toward the truth. Five interconnected cases unfold across the game, each building on the last. Developed and published by Capcom, Dai Gyakuten Saiban was released exclusively in Japan on July 9, 2015, and was never officially localized for Western markets during its 3DS run. It was directed by series creator Shu Takumi — returning to the director's chair for the first time since the original trilogy — with art by Kazuya Nuri and a soundtrack composed by Yasumasa Kitagawa and Hiromitsu Maeba. The game received a worldwide release only in July 2021 as part of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC — making the original 3DS cartridge a rare and significant collector's piece for dedicated fans of the franchise.
