Olino | Gampi Paper (Deckled) | Sheet
Gampi paper comes from the Philippines where the Abaca tree grows. The fibers have been popular there for centuries because they are enormously strong. It used to be made into fabrics for clothing in addition to rope. The tree produces long fibers with a nice sheen, very suitable for paper. Other fibers are added to it, including cogon grass, a weed that was done nothing with until it was discovered that it can be made into paper just fine. The peeled bark is boiled and crushed in large kettles. The paper pulp mass is dissolved in water, spread evenly by hand on large scoop frames and such things as flower petals or dried leaves are added. Now the scoop frames are set out in the sun to dry. When the sheets are dry, they are removed from the grids, smoothed and checked.
