'Howgate Wonder' Apple Tree
If you're looking for big apples, and we're talking really big apples, then 'Howgate Wonder' is the tree you're looking for. With its huge apples, known to weigh up to 1kg each, this apple is one of the best dual-purpose varieties around. While its primary strength is being used as a cooker, providing a great alternative to the classic 'Bramley' apple, it offers a significant value as a dessert variety, too, when the fruits are left to ripen and mellow on the tree. Besides their large nature, the fruits are mixed in colour and crop in abundance. Though , this variety (and its yields )can benefit from another apple tree (in pollination group 2, 3 or 4) being planted nearby. Apple trees are known for attracting beneficial wildlife to the garden, and in fact hold the Royal Horticultural Society's Plants for Pollinators certification. A recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Howgate Wonder has been shown to perform particularly well in British gardens.
