Grotto Shell Mirror Grotta Marina - Gilded Venetian Mirror
The Grotta Marina (KS0013) is a mirror 184 cm high, carved and painted entirely by hand in solid wood. The frame is densely set with shells, starfish, seahorses, branching coral, a crab, and a sea turtle, each one carved separately and finished in champagne-gold gilding with warm bronze accents. The forms draw on the Rococo, where rocaille, ornament inspired by shells, rockwork, grottoes, and flowing natural shapes, was central. In the nineteenth century this imagery flowered again in the Italian grotto furniture tradition: fanciful pieces and mirrors that seemed to be built from shells, coral, and sea creatures. With its generous scale, the Grotta Marina needs a wall with room to breathe: an entrance hall, a high-ceilinged living room, a boutique hotel, or a luxurious bathroom. Its maritime subject also makes it well suited to a house by the sea, a coastal residence, or a smart seafood restaurant.
