This is the most important distinction in the N95 category. The 3M 8511 and 8210V are NIOSH approved industrial/occupational N95 respirators — they protect the wearer from inhaling airborne particles. The Halyard FluidShield 46727/46827 is both a NIOSH approved N95 respirator AND an FDA cleared surgical mask with ASTM Level 3 fluid splash protection. That means it also protects against blood, body fluids, and respiratory secretions splashing onto the face. For surgical settings, procedure rooms, or any clinical environment with fluid exposure risk, the FluidShield is the correct choice. The 3M 8511 and 8210V are not appropriate substitutes for a surgical N95 in these environments. Is this the same as the Kimberly-Clark 46727? Yes — the Halyard FluidShield 46727 and 46827 are the same products previously sold under the Kimberly-Clark brand. Halyard Health was spun off from Kimberly-Clark and the product line continued unchanged. If you have ordered Kimberly-Clark 46727 or 46827 in the past, the Halyard version is the identical product. What does ASTM Level 3 mean? ASTM Level 3 is the highest recognized level of fluid splash protection for surgical masks, as defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials. It requires a splash resistance of at least 160 mmHg — roughly equivalent to arterial blood pressure. A Level 3 mask protects against high-velocity fluid splatter in surgical or procedural settings. Level 1 and Level 2 masks offer progressively lower levels of fluid resistance and are appropriate for lower-risk procedures. What size should I order — Regular (46727) or Small (46827)? Most adult users wear the Regular size (46727). The Small size (46827) is appropriate for users with smaller faces who cannot achieve a proper seal with the Regular. If a good seal cannot be obtained with either size, consult your facility's fit testing protocol. The respirator should fit over the nose and under the chin with no gaps at the sides. Can this mask be reused? The FluidShield is designed as a single-use disposable mask. In times of shortage, limited reuse (no more than 3 times per mask) with proper sanitization protocols may be considered as an emergency measure — consult your facility's infection prevention guidelines before reusing. Never reuse a mask that is visibly soiled, damaged, or wet. Does this mask protect against odors? No — N95 respirators filter particles but are not designed to filter gases or chemical vapors, including odors. For odor or chemical protection, a respirator with activated carbon or appropriate cartridge filters is required. Is a prescription or professional license required? Yes — this product is labeled "Rx only." A valid prescription or professional/business license is required before shipment. Call 866-218-0902 for assistance with the verification process.
