America the Beautiful
When I was a kid, my parents made a big deal of America’s 200th anniversary celebration. We had an old VW bug, and they somehow constructed a two- layer cake around it with wood, and chicken wire. We stuck each little hole with tissue paper to look like icing, then to top it off, my sister could climb up through the sunroof and pop out of the top of the cake. We were the hit of our annual Sandalwood 4th of July Parade in Houston. I’ve never forgotten that memory and it inspired me to do something special for our nation’s 250th! Entirely made out of small pieces of paper, this Old Glory is layered with all kinds of torn and cut papers that tell a story. You’ll find words and images representing ideals associated with America – independence, freedom opportunity, community and resilience. Hidden throughout are songs, anthems and lyrics, parts of the Constitution, the roads and small towns that help define our country, and of course a vintage Uncle Sam! Our country’s history is complex, and we have not always gotten things right. Yet, this anniversary reminds me to not take for granted the many, many people who sacrificed, served and gave thier lives to help build the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy today. I created this in a spirit of gratitude. My hope is that, politics aside, it serves as a reminder to reflect on our shared history, appreciate what we have, and celebrate the enduring ideals that conitue to unite us.
