Mix and match is totally cool. “Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it”. - Lao Tzu Mnemosyne is a central but little known Titan Goddess - the goddess of memory, the daughter of Gaia and Uranus, and the mother of the 9 muses, sired by Zeus. Due to her connection with memory, it is said that poets and mystics called upon her aid in accurately recalling and performing the poem they were about to recite. Mnemosyne is also associated closely with a well, a fountain, a spring, and one of the rivers of Hades - the Greek Underworld - has Her name. The counterpart of the River Mnemosyne is the River Lethe. We have a river of Remembrance (Mnemosyne) and a river of Forgetting (Lethe). In Greek myth, most souls of the dead drink of the River Lethe to forget; like a puff of opium inhaled to to forget their past lives, their sorrows, their shame; seeking the solace of forgetfulness. In the ancient Greek mythical religion of Orphism, the initiated were taught to instead drink from the Mnemosyne, the river of memory, which would stop the transmigration of the soul. This mythology came to me while I was harvesting these grapes in the vineyard this past October. It was a sunny and warm day. We hadn’t hired a big enough crew and it looked like it was going to be at least a 12 hour day to get the fruit off the vines. But I didn’t feel stressed or rushed - just oddly out of my body and having weird meta memories every so often, when I paused to take in the enormity of the progress this day represented. Each row contained specific recollections - in that spot I watched our infant son pluck clover while wearing a blue speckled sun hat. We had a big argument in that spot. Now we've reached the giant rock our friend tried to dig out of the vineyard during planting but it was too big, so we shoved it under the dripline. In this row my mom and I picked a few measly grape bunches during our 5th year of farming after yet another unsuccessful year. In that spot I wailed on my hands and knees, coming to grips with the fact that something major needed to change in my life. I was in that row singing when I finally found the courage to listen to my heart. This wine is a tribute to the many streams of memories that this land and water and vines contains, from these past 8 years of stewardship. So many stories, so many moments - both victorious and devastatingly painful—have become part of our shared histories. Much of that water - and those memories - is captured in these grapes, and in this wine.
