Antique Well Worn Green and Yellow Hebron Beads - RIta Okrent Collection (AT1905)
A strand of graduated antique Hebron beads, mostly green with some yellow and one blue bead, ranging from 11-23mm in diameter, 22 inches / 56 cm long. In fair condition, can be cleaned with olive oil or water.
- The beads were traditionally made using sand from the village of Bani Na'im and sodium carbonate from the Dead Sea.
- Hebron became a major center for producing glass beads for trade, particularly in Africa, from the 18th to the mid-19th century.
- Due to their prevalence in West Africa, especially in Kano, Nigeria, they are also known as 'Kano beads'.
