Ask the CEO: A Conversation with Ali Noorani, Head of the Barr Foundation

Listen in on a conversation with Ali Noorani, who became president of the Barr Foundation in December 2025. In a discussion with Stacy Palmer, the Chronicle’s CEO, the two considered the role of regional philanthropy, such as Barr, which focuses on arts, climate, and education across New England. We also drew on Noorani’s experiences overseeing the Hewlett Foundation’s democracy program to consider how foundations can make a difference in a time of profound change — marked by declining trust in institutions, rising pressure on communities, and systems that cannot be restored. As part of the Chronicle’s Commons project, Noorani also discussed what he learned as chair of the global board of More in Common, which works to build more resilient and inclusive societies, and as CEO of the National Immigration Forum. We delved into ways philanthropy can work across divides, and the importance of listening more deeply, investing in local leadership, and help rebuild trust and community.
