The German Panzer VI E, often referred to simply as the Tiger I, was developed in response to the unexpectedly stubborn resistance encountered by German armored forces in the months following the invasion of the Soviet Union, particularly by the T-34 and KV-1. The Tiger I was the first tank to be equipped with an 88mm gun, the anti-aircraft version of which had already demonstrated excellent anti-aircraft and anti-armor capabilities. The Tiger I saw action on nearly every German front during the war, often deployed in independent heavy tank groups. While a potent psychological deterrent for many adversaries, its complex design, the use of expensive materials and production processes, and the time-consuming nature of its production led to only 1,347 units produced between August 1942 and August 1944.
