I’ll learn what a phrase or an idea really means, then try to erase that explanation from my mind and imagine what it might look like to someone hearing it for the first time. That impulse led to pieces like The Green Monster, The Big Red Machine, The Yips, The Batter’s Eye off the top of my head. This one comes from that same strange corner of the Pop Fly universe. At the start of the 10th inning, a runner who never reached base suddenly appears on second. Baseball calls him the ghost runner. Growing up on Hanna-Barbera cartoons, I started wondering what that might have meant without any baseball context. What if The Ghost Runners had been a forgotten Saturday-morning cartoonGroovy Ghoulies-adjacent about a mysterious team that materialized whenever a game went into extra innings? From there, the rule and its nickname became the entire creative brief and I filled in the rest with the cast, the colors, the 10-cent cover price, and a show that comes on at 10 (well, really, in THE 10th). Maybe I also needed to make something that was simply fun this week. But this is also Pop Fly returning to one of its oldest ideas: taking the language of baseball seriously enough to imagine it completely wrong. Available for one week only.
