László Moholy-Nagy 'School of Design in Chicago' Catalogue Cover Poster
This poster reproduces the front cover of a course catalogue for the School of Design in Chicago, created by László Moholy-Nagy around 1943. A glass lens rests on a drafting drawing of grids and receding planes beside a pair of dividers, with the school's name set in script beneath. Moholy-Nagy taught at the Bauhaus from 1923 to 1928, running the foundation course and the metal workshop. In 1937 he moved to Chicago to direct the New Bauhaus, which closed after a single academic year. He opened the School of Design in February 1939 on East Ontario Street, with backing from Walter Paepcke of the Container Corporation of America. The cover puts the school's teaching on display, bringing optics, light and technical drawing together in one image. The school was reorganised as the Institute of Design in 1944, and Moholy-Nagy directed it until his death in Chicago in November 1946.
