The Coralline Crag Collection

The Coralline Crag Collection is a body of work by Steven James Will, embodying the landscape of the Suffolk Coast. Each piece is hand-thrown in porcelain mixed with locally quarried Coralline Crag, creating a highly textured and individual surface that speaks to the provenance of the material. Inspired by the wild heaths, coastline and meandering estuaries surrounding Steven’s home and studio, the collection reflects his sensitive, provenance-focused approach to making. By incorporating Coralline Crag into porcelain, Steven brings a distinctive piece of the Suffolk landscape into each piece, creating objects that are both tactile and deeply connected to place. Coralline Crag is a rare Pliocene marine deposit found along the Suffolk Coast, principally between Felixstowe and Aldeburgh. A loose, friable material formed from bioclastic calcarenites, silty sands and carbonate-rich skeletal debris, the Crag contains remnants of its marine origins, including fossilised shells, coral and, on occasion, shark teeth and turtle eggs. Historically, Crag was quarried locally throughout the Suffolk Sandlings. Rich in seashells and naturally alkaline, it was traditionally spread onto the area's poor, acidic soils as an alternative to lime. Local Crag was also used as a building material, including in historic structures such as Orford Castle. Exclusively for The Merchant’s Table, Steven James Will creates an ongoing collection of individual hand-thrown candlesticks, vases and bud vases, each made from porcelain combined with locally sourced Coralline Crag. No two pieces are alike, with variations in the material and making process giving each its own distinctive texture, character and connection to the Suffolk Coast.
