Working Load Limit by Size Hook size Matches chain WLL per hook SKU 1/4 inch 1/4" Grade 70 3,150 lbs CH14 5/16 inch 5/16" Grade 70 4,700 lbs CH516 3/8 inch 3/8" Grade 70 6,600 lbs CH38 1/2 inch 1/2" Grade 70 11,300 lbs CH12 Choosing the Right Size Match the hook to your chain: the hook size, chain size and grade must all agree, and the assembly is only as strong as its weakest part. Under FMCSA cargo securement rules (49 CFR 393.106), the combined WLL of all tie-downs must equal at least 50% of the cargo weight. Grade 70 hooks are for horizontal cargo tie-down only and are not rated for overhead lifting. Need an adjustable end? Pair a grab hook with a 5/16" clevis slip hook with latch. For 1/2" chain, see the 1/2" Grade 70 clevis grab hook. Frequently Asked Questions What does a clevis grab hook do?It terminates a chain. The clevis end attaches to the chain with a pin, and the shallow throat grips one chain link so the chain cannot slide through the hook. Which size do I need? The same size as your chain. A 5/16" hook goes on 5/16" chain, a 3/8" hook on 3/8" chain, and so on. Mixing sizes can keep the link from seating properly. Can I use Grade 70 hooks for lifting? No. Grade 70 is a transport grade for cargo tie-down. Overhead lifting requires Grade 80 or Grade 100 hardware with a lifting rating. How many hooks come in an order? One hook per unit ordered. For larger quantities, use the 5/16" or 3/8" multi-pack listings linked above. Need help choosing?
