Red Spotted Striped Discosoma Mushroom, Discosoma sp., is a colorful corallimorpharian with a broad fleshy oral disc, pronounced radial folds, and a heavily textured surface. This specimen displays a deep burgundy-red base covered with dense bright red raised vesicles and broad pale mint-green to cream radial striping. The contrasting pale stripes extend outward across the folded disc and stand out strongly against the saturated red tissue. Numerous red surface vesicles add additional texture throughout the mushroom, while subtle green highlights appear near portions of the central and outer areas. The combination of stripes, spots, and deep red coloration gives this specimen a highly distinctive multicolor appearance. Discosoma species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy. They can also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture fine suspended organic material from the surrounding water. Because coloration and external appearance alone are not sufficient for reliable species-level identification within the genus, Discosoma sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation for this specimen.
