Coral Heart Pendant, Made for Vered

Vered came back from a holiday with a handful of things she had gathered at the water's edge: shells, small pieces of coral, whatever the sea had left on the sand that week. One piece of white coral had come out of the water shaped like a heart. Nobody carved it and nobody helped it along. It simply washed up that way. The heart is a shape that keeps returning in the pieces I have made for Vered over the years, usually because I put it there: a gold leaf laid over the Rough Garnet Ring, and hidden all through the Vered Heart Sapphire Halo Ring. This time the sea had done it first, so there was nothing to design. The work was to hold the coral without touching what made it worth keeping. I carved a small cap in wax for each of the two upper points, and gave them a surface that carries on the pitted texture of the coral itself, so the gold reads as the same material rather than as a frame around it. Each cap is pinned into the coral with gold and soldered to the chain, so the pendant hangs from both sides and sits open across the collarbone. Made in 14K yellow gold, on a 42 cm rolo chain.
