The stone is a beautiful deep red, scattered with small white concentric circles that remind me of tiny eyes staring outward from its surface. I wanted those markings to remain the focus, so I kept the necklace itself simple with a clean spiral braid that frames the stone without competing with it. Bloodstone is traditionally a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz composed primarily of silicon dioxide. Classic bloodstone is usually dark green with red iron-oxide inclusions, although stones sold under the bloodstone name can display a much broader range of colors and patterns. I especially love the orbicular, eye-like markings in this particular pendant because they give it a character unlike any other stone. In crystal traditions, bloodstone is commonly associated with courage, vitality, protection, and grounding. I made this necklace with an adjustable sliding bead closure so I can easily change its length and wear it in different ways. The minimalist design makes it an easy everyday piece, while the strange beauty of the stone gives it just enough mystery to stand apart. To me, those tiny natural circles look almost watchful, which is why I think of this piece as The Watcher Stone.
