— Heavy-Duty Ball Bearing Gate Hinges — The Small Part That Decides How Your Gate Ages Nobody compliments a hinge. But it is the one component that decides whether a beautiful gate still closes properly in twenty years — or starts to drop in the first summer. 01 Where an expensive gate gives itself away A steel gate is heavy. That weight is the whole point — it is why the leaf feels substantial in the hand and closes with intent. But every kilogram of it hangs on two small pieces of hardware. Put a basic butt hinge or a plain pin-and-sleeve under a heavy leaf and the load grinds metal against metal from day one: the swing gets stiff, the gate settles, the latch stops lining up, and eventually the top corner sits low and the gap runs out of square. It is almost never the gate that fails first. It is the hinge. 02 A sealed bearing carries the weight, instead of fighting it Inside each of these hinges is a sealed ball bearing race, sitting on a square-section bearing seat. The leaf rests on the bearing, and the bearing rolls — so the load is carried, not scraped. The result is a gate you can move with one finger, a full 180° of travel, and a swing that feels the same in year fifteen as it did on the day it went up. No squeal, no grinding, no annual dose of lubricant, no slow sag. That is the difference between hardware that is rated for the job and hardware that merely fits it. 03 Fully adjustable, so the gate hangs right on site No opening is ever perfectly plumb, and no post goes in perfectly square. These hinges are adjustable on a threaded stem with a lock nut, so the installer can wind the leaf up, down, in or out on site — square the gate to the post, set the latch gap exactly, then lock it and leave it. It turns the difference between a gate that has been hung and a gate that has been fitted, and it means a small movement in the ground years later is a two-minute adjustment rather than a callout. 04 Rated well beyond the gate you are hanging These hinges come in three bearing sizes, and all are deliberately over-specified for residential work. The 40 mm bearing is rated to 350 kg per hinge, the 65 mm bearing to 400 kg, and the 75 mm bearing to 450 kg — comfortably beyond any single pedestrian leaf or driveway leaf we build. Hardware that spends its life working well inside its limit is hardware that does not wear out. If you are unsure which size suits your opening, call us with the leaf width and height and we will tell you. 05 The hardware we put on our own gates We did not add these to the range to widen the catalogue. We went looking for a better hinge because our own heavier gates deserved one, tested them on our own work, and now fit them as standard to selected Mason & Dean gates. Steel body, zinc plated for Australian weather, sealed bearings, and fully adjustable — the same hardware our gates hang on, matched to the gates we build. — How these compare — What matters Ball Bearing Gate Hinge Standard Butt / Pin Hinge How the load is carried Sealed ball bearing race — the leaf rolls on the bearing, so weight is carried rather than scraped. Steel pin turning inside a steel sleeve — metal grinding on metal every time the gate moves. Load rating 350 kg (40 mm bearing), 400 kg (65 mm bearing) or 450 kg (75 mm bearing) per hinge — well beyond a residential leaf. Often unrated, or rated close to the weight of the gate it is asked to hold. Hanging the gate straight Adjustable up, down, in and out on a threaded stem — square the leaf and set the latch gap on site. Fixed position — the gate hangs wherever the post lets it, and packing is the only fix. How it feels to use Smooth, quiet, effortless through a full 180° — a heavy gate that moves with one hand. Stiff and noisy under weight, and gets worse as the bearing surfaces wear. Years four to twenty Holds its alignment — no sag, no drag, no annual lubricating routine. The classic sagging gate: dropped top corner, latch that misses, a scrape mark on the path. Weather Zinc plated steel body with sealed bearings — built for outdoor Australian conditions. Bare or lightly coated, with an open pin that collects grit and water. — Choose your size — Size Bearing diameter Load rating per hinge Best suited to 40 mm 40 mm ball bearing 350 kg Single pedestrian and side-access gates, and standard driveway leaves. 65 mm 65 mm ball bearing 400 kg Wide or tall driveway leaves, solid-infill gates, and automated gates. 75 mm 75 mm ball bearing 450 kg The heaviest leaves — oversized or double-skinned driveway gates, full solid infill, and automated gates on long spans. — Built to last — Engineering specifications Type 180° Ball Bearing Swing Gate Hinge Bearing Sealed ball race on square bearing seat Sizes available 40 mm, 65 mm, 75 mm Load rating 350 kg / 400 kg / 450 kg per hinge Material Steel Finish Bright Zinc Plated Adjustment Threaded stem with lock nut, all directions Opening angle Up to 180° Fixing Bolt-through plates, gate leaf to post Supplied as Pair — one gate leaf — Fitting and quantities — How many you need Each gate leaf needs a pair — one hinge at the top and one at the bottom of the hinge stile. A single pedestrian gate takes one pair. A double driveway gate takes two pairs, one for each leaf. Fitting is straightforward for anyone comfortable with a drill and a spanner: bolt the plates through the gate stile and the post, wind the stem to square the leaf, set the latch gap, then lock the adjustment nuts. For a clean swing on a heavy steel gate we recommend a minimum 100 × 100 mm steel post, and we supply the full range of compatible posts, latches, drop bolts and hardware to suit. Not sure which size you need? Call us with the leaf width, height and infill style and we will tell you exactly what to order — no guesswork, no wrong parts arriving on site. — Chosen, not just stocked — The hinge we use ourselves Mason & Dean builds heavy steel gates by hand in Tamworth, and we are the ones who get the call if a gate stops closing properly. That is why we went looking for a better hinge — and why this is the one we now fit to selected gates in our range as standard. If it is good enough to carry our own work and our own warranty, it is good enough to sell on its own. Nationwide delivery, a complete range of matching posts and heavy-duty hardware, and expert guidance from a real person who has actually hung the gate you are fitting. — Ready when you are — Talk to us before you buy Tell us which gate you have and we will confirm the right hinge size, quantity and matching post — along with latches, drop bolts and everything else the opening needs.
