The vented cutouts of the hood are designed to not block the view from the camera's viewfinder or block the flash from reaching the subject. Since the end of the lens is extended, you get the benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. The hood screws directly onto the filter threads of the lens and allows for a 58mm inner pinch lens cap to be used directly on the hood.
