These two Victorian majolica plates are deeply moulded with overlapping hop, vine and strawberry leaves, curling stems and clusters of fruit, finished with a softly scalloped edge. The deep, even green glaze brings out the veining of the leaves and the layered relief of the design. Closely matched in colour, the plates sit naturally as a pair. Although unmarked, the detailed modelling and rich monochrome glaze are characteristic of English majolica from the late nineteenth century. Condition Excellent antique condition. Both plates are free from chips, cracks, repairs or restoration, and the glaze remains rich. Dimensions Approximately 22 cm diameter each plate. Origin England, c. 1870–1890. Unmarked. WORLDWIDE SHIPPING Worldwide shipping is available. Each piece is carefully packed to ensure it arrives safely. Collector’s Note Naturalistic leaf-moulded pottery became particularly fashionable during the second half of the nineteenth century. Majolica allowed potteries to combine deeply modelled botanical forms with saturated translucent glazes, while vines, strawberries and hops reflected the Victorian interest in nature as decoration.
