The Stranger

Phaidon and Artspace are pleased to present The Stranger, a new limited edition by Bahamian-born artist Tavares Strachan. Released alongside Phaidon's landmark monograph on the artist, The Stranger distills the artist's distinctive style and enduring exploration of history, visibility, and cultural memory.Among the most celebrated conceptual artists of his generation, Strachan creates works that connect history, science, exploration, and cultural memory. His multidisciplinary practice investigates the people and narratives left out of traditional historical accounts, expanding our understanding of who is remembered, and why. Strachan's first museum survey in the United States, The Day Tomorrow Began, was recently presented at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and is currently on view at the Columbus Museum of Art.The Stranger brings together many of the ideas that have defined Strachan's practice. An astronaut – one of the artist's recurring symbols of ambition, discovery, and possibility – appears amid fragments of language and image, inviting viewers to consider what histories are preserved and what stories remain unseen."I think artists are the best indicators of the future," says Strachan. "There's a great deal of research – and by research, I mean scientific research, I mean ethnographic research, I mean history, philosophical research – that goes into art-making. And this is why I think artists are particularly charged with having this way of understanding the future."
