Place the backing underneath the garment, hoop the garment and backing together, then embroider the design. After embroidery, remove the item from the hoop and trim away the excess backing with sharp scissors or shears, leaving approximately 1/4" around the outside of the design. Rounding the corners instead of leaving them square can help prevent curling later.
