Annie Tolliver "Witch Riding Broom" — Outsider Folk Art Painting on Wood, 2006

This is a wonderful piece of self-taught folk art by Annie Tolliver, daughter of the famous Alabama folk artist Mose Tolliver, painted on plywood and signed "Annie T." in the lower left corner. The piece depicts a witch in classic Tolliver-family style — bold, flattened forms, a heavy black silhouette body, an exaggerated brown head with a pointed black hat, wide cartoonish eyes, a long pointed nose, and a red open mouth with white teeth. The figure's hands grip a broom handle, with elongated fingers tipped in red "nails." The painting is bordered with a hand-painted sage green frame line, giving it that classic vernacular gallery presentation typical of work from the Tolliver family and other Alabama self-taught artists. The back of the panel is signed and dated by the artist in black marker: "4-1-06, Witch Riding Broom," confirming both the title and a 2006 creation date, which is a nice bonus for documentation and provenance. The reverse also shows the plywood substrate with visible wood grain, scattered paint drips and overspray from the artist's working process, a hanging wire/loop at top for display, and what appears to be an old label or paper remnant adhered to the lower section (partially worn).
