Dante Cruz runs El Sueño Zapoteco in San Martín Tilcajete, a workshop known for its wit and invention. This hummingbird shows a different side of him. The bird hovers mid-flight, wings fanned in full display, each feather carved separately and removable. Dante has painted all, deep violet with bold red bullseye circles; the body is covered in delicate white lacework over a deeper purple ground. The beak graduates from red to gold at the base. The whole piece is mounted on a section of raw copal bark, as if the bird simply paused there. In Aztec belief, warriors who fell in battle returned to the world as hummingbirds — companions of the sun, tireless and fearless. With dozens of hummingbird species now facing serious population decline across the Americas, that symbolism has only grown more resonant. Origin: Oaxaca Dimensions: 7''Tall 5.5''Long 5''Wide
