Although the word Bokken is widely the most used outside Japan to refer to the wooden sword used in martial arts, in Japanese the more correct term is actually Bokutō (lit. "wooden katana"). Just as with the term Samurai, which is commonly used outside Japan but to which the Japanese generally prefer the term Bushi. The term Bokken, from a Japanese perspective, refers to a generic sword of any shape, not necessarily similar to a katana; compared to bokutō, the term bokken is therefore more generic as it could refer to both a katana and any other type of sword. Finally, depending on the school, the bokutō can take on different shapes and sizes; for example, the Niten Ichiryu uses thin wooden swords, with very little curvature and without a tsuba. It is mainly used in the training of martial arts that involve the use of the sword: in Kendō, in particular, it is used for the execution of the ten kata.
