Also known as Dotted Blazing Star. Dotted Gayfeather is a perennial wildflower sporting showy purple flowers. Best sited in full sun with lean, well-drained soil — excess fertility or moisture tends to produce floppy stems. It likes dry to very dry conditions; tolerates poor, rocky, sandy, or shallow limestone soils with excellent drainage. Found in shortgrass and mixed-grass prairies, rocky outcrops, roadsides, and open slopes. Does not tolerate wet feet or heavy clay that retains moisture. Dotted Gayfeather is an excellent choice for dry prairie gardens, pollinator plantings, and xeric landscapes. It works well in container gardens. It is a long-lived plant that is tolerant of alkaline soils. This plant makes an excellent cut flower and, if cut at the beginning of its bloom, will retain its purple color and make an excellent dry flower for arrangements.
