Les Riceys is the only village in all of Champagne with its own still wine appellation. Rosé des Riceys, a still rosé made from Pinot Noir, exists because the fruit grown here is so fantastic that it can stand on its own without bubbles, and it’s a wine that can genuinely be so delicious, layered, and expressive. (We’re not including any in this pack since it isn’t sparkling, but consider it a rabbit hole worth falling down.) That same remarkable fruit is what Pascal Walczak harnesses for his sparkling cuvees, and this 6-pack is the perfect way to taste what all the fuss is about. Located in the Aube, at the southern end of Champagne, Les Riceys is actually three villages in one (Ricey-Bas, Ricey-Haut, and Ricey-Haute-Rive), and it’s the largest appellation commune in all of France. The marl and limestone soils here give the Pinot Noir a distinctive combination of ripe red fruit and bright, mineral tension. Pascal is a small, hands-on grower who farms his family’s vines with determination and care, and his wines are a fabulously delicious window into this special place. We were charmed by our walks through their vineyards and cellar, and couldn't help but laugh when we tried to enter the old, small, mound-shaped stone structures in the fields that used to house the vineyard equipment. The doors were about two feet tall, and frankly, we felt like giants. (But very happy giants!) Most importantly, let’s break down the three wines. The Rosé de Macération Brut 2023 gets its color and character from skin contact, much like a still rosé, which means deeper flavor and a touch more structure, with notes of ripe strawberry, wild raspberry, and a savory, spicy edge, with a lively finish. The Rosé de Vignes Brut NV takes a different approach, with a more delicate and refined profile – giving fresh red cherry, citrus zest, and floral notes, all wrapped in crisp and chalky freshness. Finally, the Blanc de Noirs Brut NV is 100% Pinot Noir pressed gently to keep the juice white. It’s rich and layered, with notes of baked apple, white cherry, and brioche, plus a vibrantly mineral backbone. Together, these three bottles tell the story of Les Riceys from three angles, and with two of each, you’ll have plenty to share, compare, and enjoy. They’re equally lovely on their own as aperitifs, or at the table with everything from charcuterie to roast chicken to salmon. Snag this limited 6-pack while we still have it, support a small grower doing incredible things with Pinot Noir, and discover why Les Riceys deserves a spot at the top of your Champagne list!
