Sharad Purnima with Annakut and Daan Leela

This intricate Pichwai painting by artist Dinesh Soni depicts the sacred autumn full moon night of Sharad Purnima. Pichwai is an intricate, 400-year-old devotional artform from Rajasthan that is traditionally hung behind the deity Shrinathji, a seven-year old manifestation of Krishna, featuring vibrant natural colors, pure gold leaf and iconic motifs like cows, peacocks and blooming lotuses. At the center of the composition is Shrinathji, rendered in his characteristic dark complexion, wearing resplendent garments and adorned with layered necklaces, floral garlands, an ornamented braid and a peacock feather headdress (mor mukut). His left hand is raised, symbolising him lifting the Govardhan mountain to protect the residents of Braj, while his right hand is resting at his waist, holding a kamal chadi and flute. Offerings comprising of prasad dibbi, jal dani and paan beeda rest by his feet, as he is flanked by gopis dressed in traditional Rajasthani attire, wearing ghagra, choli and odhani, immersed in devotion to Shrinathji. The lower register features the scene of Govardhan Puja to the left, where an Annakut (mountain of grains) is surrounded by a plethora of food dishes as offerings to Krishna as a token of gratitude and worship from the villagers of Braj. To the right is a depiction of the Daan leela, where Krishna, accompanied by Balarama, demands butter from the gopis as tax, as a playful calf bounds along the lush green landscape, where peacocks and peahens can also be seen. The lowest panels feature a row of white cows adorned with saffron handprints, symbolising the presence of Krishna and protection towards his beloved companions, highlighting his role as Gopala or protector of the cattle. Below this is a representation of the yamuna rover, with blooming lotus flowers, anchoring the entire scene to the sacred riverbank. The backdrop of the trees and Govardhan mountain against the starry night sky adds to the beauty of the scene, with the celestial chariots of Shiva-Parvati with Nandi and Indra-Indayini with Airavata act as divine witnesses. The composition is framed by an ornate arch, surrounded by 24 swaroops of Shrinathji, depicting the different festive traditions in the ritual calendar of Pustimarg, including Janmashtami, Snan Yatra, ratha Yatra, Sharad Poornima, Govardhan Puja, Annakut, Tulsi Vivah, etc. The painting is enclosed within a border of floral motifs, completing the devotional piece.
