Standard bore piston ring set with upper end gasket set that fits the Gravely L-head single cylinder engine. Replaces ring set 14594. Fits the 5, 6.6 and 7.6 horsepower engines. THE ENGINE. The tractor maker built this engine itself - an air cooled, L-head, side valve single cylinder used in the two-wheel walking tractors from the late 1930s to about 1975. Model L and its derivatives: LI, LS, LT, L8, Super Convertible, Custom Convertible and the Convertible 7.6. SPECIFICATION Bore - 3.250 inch, 82.55mm Stroke - 3.500 inch Displacement - 29 cubic inches, 475cc Rings - three, chrome top compression, steel second, three-piece oil control ONE BORE, THREE HORSEPOWER RATINGS. The 5, 6.6 and 7.6 horsepower engines all share the 3.250 inch bore. The ratings came from head, camshaft, carburetor and oil system changes and a higher governed speed, not from displacement. One standard ring set therefore covers all three. THE GASKET SET COVERS ALL THREE TOO. The factory split its own upper end gasket sets three ways by cover type - 15676A for the 5, 15676B for the 6.6 with its two-piece cover, and 15676C for the 7.6 with the cast iron one-piece cover. Ours is assembled to cover all three, with the extra gaskets included, so one kit suits whichever version you have. TELLING THE ENGINES APART - worth knowing even though the kit covers all three Angled spark plug in the head - 5 or 6.6 horsepower Vertical spark plug - 7.6 horsepower Two-piece upper cover - 6.6 horsepower Cast iron one-piece upper cover - 7.6 horsepower Serial prefix - plain numeric on the 5, M and 2M on the 6.6, J on the 7.6 OVERSIZES. The factory supplied pistons and rings in .005, .010, .015, .020, .025 and .030 oversize. This is the standard set. Measure the finished bore before ordering if the block has been cut. The piston and wrist pin are separate parts and are not included. FITS ALL THREE GRAVELY L-HEAD ENGINES - the 5, 6.6 and 7.6 horsepower singles fitted to the two-wheel walking tractors. All three are the same engine: 3.250 inch bore, 3.500 inch stroke, 29 cubic inches, 475cc. The horsepower differences came from head, cam and carburetor changes, not from displacement. ONE BORE, AND A GASKET SET THAT COVERS EVERY VERSION - All three engines measure 3.250 inch, 82.55mm, so one standard ring set does the lot. IDENTIFY YOUR ENGINE ANYWAY - it is worth knowing which you have before you start. An angled spark plug in the head is the 5 or the 6.6. A vertical, straight-in plug is the 7.6. A two-piece upper cover is the 6.6. A cast iron one-piece cover is the 7.6. Serial prefixes run plain numeric for the 5, then M and 2M for the 6.6, then J for the 7.6. STANDARD BORE - The factory furnished pistons and rings in .005, .010, .015, .020, .025 and .030 oversize as well as standard. This set is standard. If the block has been bored, measure the finished bore and order to match. Ring gaps to aim for on assembly: .012 to .020 on the chrome top ring, .008 to .016 on the steel second, .015 to .055 on the oil ring. WHAT ELSE THE JOB WANTS - Rings cure oil burning and blowby on a bore that is still round and within taper. Check the bore for taper and out-of-round before you commit, because rings in a worn bore will not seal and you will be back inside the engine in a season. Piston and wrist pin are not included in this kit - they are separate parts.
