The Slate Ring

Smooth. Wide. Shaped by time. Worn forever. The Lorelei rock is slate. It has been there since before the legend, since before the river, since before anything that could be called a story. Wind shaped it. Water shaped it. Time shaped it into exactly what it needed to be, and then stopped. Not perfectly round. Not perfectly flat. The surface catches light differently at every point around the circumference, long warm reflection here, a cool shadow there, the gold reading as amber on one side and teal on the other depending on where the light is. It looks simple until it moves. Then it looks like everything.
