2024 Terroir Series Kékfrankos (pre-release)

A single-vineyard wine originating from our certified organic and biodynamic Oak Island Vineyard in Avonport, where cool Bay of Fundy breezes shape the growing environment and contribute freshness, vibrancy and a distinctive sense of place. Kékfrankos is a red grape variety originating in Central Europe, also known as Blaufränkisch in Austria and Lemberger in Germany. Relatively rare in Canada, it is grown by only a handful of producers across the country. As part of our ongoing exploration of cold-hardy red varieties suited to Nova Scotia's cool climate, we planted the province's first—and, to our knowledge, only—block of Kékfrankos in 2013. The generous 2024 growing season allowed for excellent ripening and flavour development while retaining the natural freshness of our cool climate. Hand harvested on October 28, then crushed and destemmed prior to spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts. Following gentle basket pressing, the wine was aged for 18 months in used, neutral French oak puncheons. The nose opens with blackcurrant, baked plums and baking spice with an undertone of crunchy fall leaves and orange blossom. The palate is smooth and generous, with blackberry jam, sea breeze, dried cedar and warm cinnamon. Tannins are satisfyingly grippy but ripe and smooth. The finish meanders through berry compote, fresh blackberry and a hint of spearmint. Pair with braised lamb, eggplant Parmesan or enjoy under a blanket in front of a roaring fire.
