Celtic home shirt as worn in the seasons 1989-1991. Celtic 1989–91 was a difficult period for the club under manager Billy McNeill. In 1989–90, Celtic finished fifth in the Scottish Premier Division, reached the Scottish Cup final and the League Cup semi-finals, but lost the Scottish Cup final to Aberdeen on penalties. They also exited the European Cup Winners’ Cup in the first round against Rapid Vienna. In 1990–91, Celtic improved to third in the league and reached both the Scottish League Cup final and Scottish Cup semi-finals, but lost the League Cup final to Rangers and the Scottish Cup semi-final replay to Motherwell. Tommy Coyne was the leading scorer in 1990–91, while players such as Paul Elliott, Dariusz Dziekanowski, John Collins and Paul McStay were important members of the squad.
