The Rolex Submariner, introduced in 1953 and officially unveiled at Baselworld in 1954, is widely regarded as the most iconic dive watch ever created. Originally conceived as a professional tool for divers, the Submariner would eventually evolve far beyond its utilitarian roots to become one of the most recognisable luxury sports watches in the world. In 1969, Rolex introduced the Submariner Date with the launch of the landmark reference 1680. While the earliest Submariners were pure no-nonsense diving instruments, the addition of a date display transformed the model into a more versatile luxury sports watch — one equally suited to underwater use and everyday wear. Presented here is a lovely 1977 reference 1680, featuring a beautifully preserved case and a superbly faded to a dark blue fat-font bezel insert. Particularly desirable is the so-called “Kissing 40” configuration, where the numerals 4 and 0 in the “40” marker touch one another.The pearl is a later addition . These early fat-font inserts are highly sought after by collectors, not only for their rarity but also because they dramatically enhance the overall character and visual impact of the watch. The Mk1 white-text dial has developed a fantastic warm patina over the years, with rich pumpkin-coloured lume on both the hour plots and hands. Combined with the faded bezel insert, the overall aesthetic is wonderfully warm, balanced, and unmistakably vintage. This “Pumpkin” Submariner is fitted with a Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, complete with end links stamped 580 and a clasp coded “P6.” The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready to be enjoyed for many years to come.
