18th Century Italian Painted Credenza
Northern Italian, probably Genoese or Ligurian Polychrome-Painted Credenza, early 18th century Polychrome-painted wood 48 × 90 × 29 in. This impressive painted buffet d’enfilade reflects the theatrical decorative taste of early eighteenth-century northern Italy. Its broad façade is organized as an architectural composition, with framed panels, Baroque scrollwork, heraldic cartouches, ribbons, floral accents, and faux-marble borders painted across the doors and side panels. The warm ochre ground, blue-gray ornament, and lively heraldic decoration suggest a Genoese or Ligurian origin, though a broader northwestern Italian attribution remains prudent. The worn surface, craquelure, abrasions, and oxidation appear consistent with early polychrome decoration, giving the cabinet a richly aged presence suited to a period interior, dining room, or gallery setting.
