Isle of Raasay Marsala Cask – Limited Release The Isle of Raasay Distillery continues to push the boundaries of maturation with this exceptional Marsala Cask Limited Release. Distilled in the summer of 2021 and bottled in July 2025, this expression is a masterclass in wood selection, marrying the Raasay whisky signature maritime smoke with the deep, sun-drenched sweetness of Sicily. Expertly crafted from a blend of lightly peated and unpeated spirit, this single malt has been fully matured in rare ex-Frazzitta Marsala Vergine barriques. Frazzitta is a legendary 19th-century producer, and their casks—seasoned for decades with the highest DOC classification of fortified wine—are almost unheard of in the whisky industry. Bottled at a robust 50.7% ABV, this is a thick, syrupy, and complex dram that bridges the gap between Hebridean peat and Mediterranean fruit. Tasting Notes Nose: Initial hits of grape must and floral parma violets, balanced by a sweet, slightly sharp zest. Palate: Rich and mouth-coating. Notes of stewed apples and sweet pear are elevated by ginger spice, maple syrup, and a sophisticated touch of balsamic vinegar. Finish: The signature Raasay wood smoke lingers long after the sweetness fades, leaving a trail of smoked toffee. Master distiller Alasdair Day explains, “It has brought an exceptional depth of flavour to our Raasay spirit. The casks we’ve used to mature our whisky have been seasoned with the bone-dry Marsala wine for up to 30 years. This adds beautiful layers of dried fruit, toasted nuts, and an oxidative depth”
