Block Skin Pik Bilum Clutch by Zipora
Our Limited-Edition Craft Series brings together the weavers’ most loved patterns and palettes, thoughtfully handcrafted in small editions. Each design is a unique work of art, created in a numbered series by collectives of 10 to 15 weavers. This collaboration has helped us connect to an additional 100 women living near Goroka in Papua New Guinea. Working in this way provides meaningful and sustainable income to support the women and their communities. Skin Pik is a very significant design to the women of Goroka, it is their way to reclaim their status in society. The story goes that at each important life event, a marriage, buying a new house or graduating school a pig is killed and shared amongst the village. The best cuts are given to the most senior people, usually men in positions of respect whilst the skin of the pig is given to the women. Through the sale of bilum the women have been able to improve their standing by earning and income and providing for their family. This Bilum is handwoven from acrylic and wool yarn as well as up-cycled knitwear using traditional weaving techniques. This purse is lined and features a frame closure and internal pocket.
