This creation by renowned Oaxaca woodcarver Luis Pablo evokes the classic fable of the Hare and the Tortoise, in which the patient turtle triumphs over the hasty hare. Yet Luis Pablo looks beyond the finish line. In his vision, the race is over, the lesson absorbed, and now the rabbit perches atop the turtle’s shell as they journey forward together. In this new chapter, there are no winners or losers, only two companions moving in harmony at the turtle’s gentle speed. Luis Pablo sculpts the turtle and rabbit as a pair, drawing out their contrasts. The turtle is grounded and robust, its broad shell and steady legs made for the long haul. Above, the rabbit sits tall and slender, every muscle poised for a sprint, paws folded with quiet anticipation. Even before the colors catch your eye, the forms themselves begin to whisper their tale. The turtle’s shell dazzles with its painted design. Orange honeycomb patterns, each cradling a vigilant blue-and-white eye, sprawl across a golden yellow field bordered by lively pink and purple zigzags.
