Wheku Kahurangi- Greenstone Carved Pendant
Literally meaning ‘carved face,’ wheku are traditionally carved from wood and mounted on the gable of whare tupuna. There, they represent a venerated ancestor that the building is named after. Wheku are an ideal gift for those who are intimately connected to their whakapapa and those who want a more direct bond to tupuna (an ancestor). This wheku was carved by Alex Sands from kahurangi pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, carved with unaunahi, red wax eyes. It measures 53mm by 36mm, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
