Finding Connection, Purpose and Belonging Through Collaborative Art Making

Connection, purpose and belonging are the foundations of well-being, recognition, and empowerment. Meaningful connections build inclusion, reduce isolation and foster mutual understanding. A clear sense of purpose lets people use their talents and pursue goals that give life direction and meaning. Belonging creates spaces where people with and without disabilities feel valued, accepted and recognized as integral members of society. Together, these elements strengthen dignity. Collaborative art naturally fosters connection, purpose and belonging. Creating art together helps dissolve stigmas tied to disability, gender, socioeconomic status, or race. Authors Patty Mitchell and Susan Dlouhy have demonstrated these principals across the Unites States through collaborative art projects.
