Domaine de Montille Volnay Les Mitans

Founded in the mid-18th century, Domaine de Montille is one of the Côte d’Or’s most historic family estates and an early champion of domaine bottling. Now run by ninth-generation winemaker Étienne de Montille, the domaine draws on an exceptional range of vineyard holdings across 35 appellations in the Côte d’Or. Certified organic since 1995 and biodynamic since 2005, the estate combines low yields and meticulous vineyard work with a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar. The wines are aromatic, supple, and approachable in their youth, yet still offer the impressive capacity for ageing for which Etienne's father Hubert was renowned for. The Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans comes from a tiny 0.72-hectare holding in one of Volnay’s most celebrated vineyards. Mid-slope and east-facing, the parcel has a varied soil profile: limestone scree at the top, bedrock through the middle, and deeper clay at the bottom. That diversity helps shape a wine that is simultaneously floral, suave and spicy. Highly regarded for both red and white wines in Burgundy, the 2002 vintage is known for lending wines of pure fruit expression, refreshing acidity and silky texture. After more than two decades in bottle, de Montille’s Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 2002 is refined and ethereal, built around balance rather than power, with haunting tertiary aromatics lifted by a bright line of acidity.
